Towards Wellness Through Body Neutrality Practice.
We are not content with our bodies; rather, we desire to feel alive in them. We require vitality, inquisitiveness, assurance, and the kind of positive energy that makes life feel good. Why? Back in the 1970s, Dr. John Travis characterized wellness as a spectrum that includes illness, wellness, and neutrality, where one side is not necessarily healthy and the other isn't. This distinction was made when studying how sickness can affect an individual's health in different ways.

The absence of disease is not the sole objective of wellness. It's a state of thriving. It's accepting a mountain as your living space, learning an instrument, or starting to chat with someone you don't know. It is about expanding our awareness of life as opposed to shrinking away from it.
The roadblocks to wellness.
Heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer are among the most common health issues that can be traced back to lifestyle patterns indicating an illness. Smoking, drinking too much, experiencing chronic stress, not exercising enough, and consuming processed foods with high sugar and saturated fat content can all contribute to a sense of vitality that may be slowly losing focus.
Weight gain, particularly in the abdominal area, can increase the likelihood of developing these conditions. However, health is not solely tied to weight management. Depending on their daily routines, stress levels, and connection to joy and community, two individuals with the same size may experience distinct health effects.
Choosing to be healthy involves making small, environmentally conscious changes such as adding movement to your daily routine, eating healthily and incorporating plant-based foods into your diet, sleeping for seven to nine hours each night, and practicing yoga, mindfulness, tai chi, or laughter to help release stress.
What body neutrality teaches us.
When people think of wellness, they often think about how much healthier their bodies are compared to the body neutrality movement. It's more about how I look than what my body can do.
Body: You don't look like you are in the mirror. The system is alive with wonder:
Eyes that perceive light and color.'
Audible laughter and musical accompaniment.
Heart that rumbles thousands of times every day without you even trying to lift a finger.
Your innate energy factories, mitochondria, fuel your muscles._
A digestive tract with a vast quantity of bacteria that convert fiber to short-chain fatty acids, which are tiny metabolic components that regulate energy, immunity and inflammation.
Your brain is a complex web of neurons, chemicals, and hormones that can alter its structure through movement, learning, or connection. Serotonin, the natural anti-anxiety medication, is released during exercise. By inducing oxytocin into the brain, a hug implies that you are loved and respected by others. Body and brain are interdependent, with the latter influencing how people experience their physical surroundings.
Body positivity vs. body neutrality.
Both movements push back against narrow and unattainable beauty ideals, but in different ways. Why?
Body positivity is about celebrating the physical beauty of all shapes and sizes, asking us to appreciate where we are at in life. The goal is to disregard negative cultural norms and embrace self-love.
Functionality is the primary concern in adopting body neutrality. Why? It prompts us to gratify the actions our bodies perform - walking, stretching, breathing, dancing, healing, digesting, making something. Living life involves experiencing the experience rather than just appreciating one's appearance.
Practical tips to maintain body neutrality.?...&
The gifts you receive from your body are numerous and often overlooked. Observe and engage in activities that promote happiness, such as:
Walking, running, or rolling from one place to another — at your own pace.'
Adjusting your movements to match a tune you enjoy.
Taking deliberate deep breaths to calm the nervous system.
Gradually stretching and feeling the release of endorphins.'...
Pursuing the practice of yoga, tai-chi, or self-healing through meditation.
Give someone you love a hug and allow oxytocin to do its peaceful, beautiful thing.
The bottom line.
A single body type doesn't guarantee optimal health. The measurement isn't based on waist circumference or measurements. It is embodied in your manner of walking, talking, being full and resting. Body neutrality allows you to move beyond the dreaded cycle of appearance-based health and towards a more compassionate, sustainable way of living. How?...
Question yourself: What is the body's ability to aid you, not your appearance? The key is to live life fully. Why?
