How does good oral condition affect general well-being

We may not fully realize its impact, but enjoying good oral health is crucial to overall well-being. The condition of our teeth and gums can affect not only our physical health but also our mental health and quality of life.

Poor oral health can lead to a variety of dental problems, such as cavities, periodontal disease, and tooth loss, but it can also affect other areas of the body, such as the heart, lungs, and brain.

Studies have shown that periodontal disease, for example, has been linked to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Periodontal disease can increase the risk of heart disease by up to three times. Poor oral health has also been associated with respiratory infections, such as pneumonia and even dementia.

But what does it mean to have poor oral health? Some of the common signs of poor oral health include bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity or pain, and loose or missing teeth. If left untreated, these symptoms can progress to more serious dental problems, such as periodontitis or tooth decay.

In Uruguay and Latin America, poor oral health is a significant public health problem. According to a study by the Pan American Health Organization, more than 60% of Latin American adults have untreated dental cavities and more than half of the population has some form of periodontal disease. (5)

In Uruguay specifically, a study by the National Institute of Statistics showed that only 36% of adults visit the dentist regularly and almost 40% of adults have untreated dental cavities.

A study published in the journal Diabetes Care found a relationship between periodontal disease and insulin resistance, a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. The chronic inflammation that occurs in periodontal disease may contribute to insulin resistance by increasing the levels of inflammatory cytokines in the body. The study evaluated more than 9,000 participants, finding that they had moderate or severe periodontal disease, finding that people had significantly higher levels of insulin resistance compared to participants who had healthy gums. The study also found that the relationship between periodontal disease and insulin resistance was stronger in people over 50 years of age and in people who were overweight or obese.

Oral health is not about having a beautiful smile

Poor oral health can cause a series of much more serious problems with long-term consequences, such as difficulty eating, speaking, and even breathing correctly.

One of the most significant effects of poor oral health is the inability to properly chew food. When teeth are decayed, missing, or misaligned, it can be difficult to bite and chew food. This can lead to malnutrition and other health problems, as people may not be getting the necessary nutrients from their diet. A study conducted in Uruguay found that 24% of children and 25% of adults suffer from tooth decay, a condition that can cause cavities and pain when chewing.

Poor oral health can also affect speech and communication. Missing or loose teeth can cause difficulty pronouncing certain words, leading to speech problems and difficulty communicating effectively. This can lead to social isolation, as people may avoid social situations due to embarrassment or difficulty communicating.

Another problem that arises from poor oral health is the inability to close the mouth during sleep. When teeth are missing or not aligned correctly, it can be difficult to close your mouth properly. This can lead to snoring and sleep apnea, which have been linked to several health problems, including high blood pressure and heart disease. According to the World Health Organization, 60-90% of children and almost 100% of adults have tooth decay, which can lead to tooth loss and difficulty sleeping.

Poor oral health can also have psychological effects, such as low self-esteem and reduced quality of life. People with missing teeth may feel self-conscious about their appearance, leading to a lack of confidence and social withdrawal. In Uruguay, a study conducted by the Ministry of Public Health found that 37% of people who suffered from dental problems reported that this affected their daily lives. (eleven)

To maintain good oral health, it is important to practice good oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and using mouthwash. It is also essential to visit the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Good nutrition is also important for maintaining oral health. Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.
