Vaginal fungi are more common than you imagine. The vagina is a complex organ and very sensitive to changes. But, at the same time, it has its regulatory system. Through an acidic pH, the vagina takes care of itself to stay healthy and avoid fungal infection also called vaginal candidiasis, and bacteria that can reach its surroundings or inside. But what happens when there is a fungal infection?
75% of women have had yeast infection, the most common type of infection, at some point in their lives. Furthermore, between 5% and 8% of them have recurrent candidiasis (three to four times a year). What care should you take to avoid a fungal infection?
1. Frequent, but not excessive, hygiene
It is essential to maintain adequate hygiene in your intimate area to avoid infections, but it must be maintained in balance. Excessive hygiene, such as vaginal douching, or very aggressive products can also alter the flora of the vagina, eliminating its natural defense barrier. Remember that the vagina has its way of self-regulating!
2. Avoid scented soaps
Harsh products such as scented soaps or vaginal deodorants are also a threat to the natural vaginal flora. Choose soaps with a neutral pH, which respects the acidity that the vagina needs.
3. Keep the area clean and dry
Humidity favors the appearance of candidiasis because it is an environment in which fungi feel comfortable and can proliferate. Therefore, it is important that you always keep your intimate area clean and dry, and that you dry your body as soon as possible after the shower or pool.
4. Choose cotton underwear
For the same reason as the above, cotton clothing is the most suitable for maintaining a dry environment in your intimate area. Additionally, underwear allows the skin to breathe.
5. Avoid very tight clothing
Clothing that is too tight can cause the skin to not breathe properly, and therefore cause excessive sweating. Remember that humid environments favor the appearance of fungi. Therefore, avoid tight-fitting clothing and synthetic fabrics whenever possible.
6. Clean the area from front to back
It is one of the most common mistakes that women make when talking about intimate hygiene. Most of the bacteria and microorganisms that cause infections in the vagina live in the rectum and anus. If we apply a movement from front to back we prevent them from reaching the vagina.
7. Get enough fiber and limit sugar
Women who suffer from frequent fungal infections are recommended to eat a diet rich in fiber and low in sugar. The reason is that, for example, the yeast fungus feeds on sugars.
8. Be consistent with the treatment
The treatment of vaginal yeast usually requires a fungicide product (usually clotrimazole or miconazole), which usually comes in the form of a cream or suppositories that are placed inside the vagina. After about 6 or 7 days, the infection usually has successfully disappeared. However, if you do not apply the product every day, it may not be enough to eliminate the infection and it may persist. Even if it seems to have already disappeared, continue with the treatment until the end to prevent it from reappearing.
9. Use a condom
If you have a fungal infection, likely, your sexual partner is also infected. Men do not manifest the infection in the same way as women. In them the symptoms are usually less obvious, so there is a tendency to believe that they have not been infected. But what happens is that, if prophylactic measures are not carried out, the infection spreads from one person to another incessantly. During the entire treatment time, it is advisable to use a condom so that the infection disappears.
10. Ask your doctor for help if the infection persists
If you suspect that you have a yeast infection in the vagina (you experience burning, intense itching, pain when urinating, redness, and grayish, lumpy discharge), it is best that you go to your doctor so that he can determine the exact cause and advise you on what treatment you should continue. A fungal infection that occurs for the first time is not the same as a recurring infection. If it happens more than three or four times a year, the problem may worsen and become a more serious pathology.
